Art Taylor’s “A Voice from the Past”

Speaking about real life events, Art Taylor shared a few memorable incidents drawn upon for his stories like the one that appears in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine August 2009:

AT: “A Voice from the Past” centers on some hazing incidents very similar to the rat system at the boarding school I attended. All those* are pretty heavily fictionalized beyond those core elements, of course, but building from that foundation has helped to fuel the imagination.

*Art mentions several others in his full interview that appears in The Digest Enthusiast book four.

Art Taylor’s first story for EQMM

EQMM Dec. 1995

“My first paid publication, however, was my first story in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine—“Murder on the Orient Express” (December 1995)—a story that wasn’t originally intended as a mystery at all. Instead, it focusses on a couple honeymooning aboard the Orient Express and fumbling along a little from mishap to mishap, while the husband builds stories in his mind about the other passengers—all of it imaginary, fueled by the spirit of Christie’s novel of the same name. The story is about that imagination and how imagination suddenly helps the new marriage click, and— spoiler alert—ultimately there’s no real crime in the story at all.”

Excerpt from the 14-page interview with Art Taylor in The Digest Enthusiast book four.

Ellery Queen’s 75th Anniversary Edition

Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine Sept/Oct 2016

Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine Sept/Oct 2016

If you only buy Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine occasionally, make the double issue for Sept/Oct 2016 one of those times. It begins with a striking cover by Milton Glaser, who sold the first cover of his career to the magazine back in 1954. See that thin line that runs along the right edge? That’s the contents page. The front cover isn’t cut to the usual trim because it folds under for an extra panel that lists the issue’s all star contributors and a thumbnail of that Glaser cover from March 1954.

See who had a hand in it below:
From the Editor’s Desk: Frankly Experimental by Janice Hutchings
“The Specialty of the House” short story by Stanley Ellin

Two Steps Forward

EQMM August 2016

EQMM August 2016

When The Digest Enthusiast launched in January 2015 I ran classified ads in all the major digest magazines on newsstands for three consecutive issues. Unfortunately even at the very reasonable rates available, I wasn’t able to continue and TDE has been absent from the very type of magazines we pay tribute to each edition, ever since.

That is until now. The magnanimous Bill Crider, who writes the “Blog Bytes” column for Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, highlights TDE and this very “Digest Magazine” blog in the current issue (pg 26). What a thrill it is to see this coverage in “The World’s Leading Mystery Magazine.” It also appears on their website, The Mystery Place. Many thanks, Bill.

The American Bystander #2

The American Bystander #2

A new humor magazine, The American Bystander (TAB), is using current technology and techniques to find its audience. The second issue arrived in my mailbox yesterday, loaded with cartoons, comics and laugh-out-loud prose. Here’s a little background in their own words:

“The implosion of book and magazine publishing has left a lot of established artists and writers with no way to reach the readers who love their stuff. And for younger talents, an always-difficult career is now practically impossible. We just couldn’t take it anymore, folks, we had to do something…so we created The American Bystander. What happens next is up to you.”

TAB chairman Michael Gerber uses Kickstarter campaigns to fund the magazine’s development. As an added incentive he’s offers free classified ads to supporters. As a POD/digital publisher myself I was happy to take him up on the offer and glad to see three pages of highly varied ads in TAB #2. Here’s what ours looks like:
